Reasons To Quit Smoking Prior To Periodontal Surgery

Studies have shown that smokers had less desirable long term results after periodontal surgery compared to non-smokers. It found out that smoking and tobacco use can impair the body's ability to heal itself immediately, specially after a certain surgical procedures. In the most recent study, it is shown that when a dental patient has a periodontal surgery, smoking can greatly damage the ability of that procedure to stay intact over a long period of time. Smoking's negative side effects should be made aware to smokers as it can be costly to repeat the periodontal surgery. Smokers should cease smoking prior to periodontal surgery as this can help dental patient the chance to achieve optimal results.
